…to some music fans, he is a new artiste, while some remember him from his days as one third of a popular all boy Kenyan rap group. That’s what almost 10 years away can do to a music personality / brand…

Kleptomaniax Life

From their first release, “Freak It” in 2002 while still in school to big hits like “Maniacs Anthem”, “Haree” to “Tuendelee” to “Mi Bado Niko” to their biggest hit “Swing”, and eventually their debut album titled “M4E” (Maniax 4Ever), released in 2005, Kleptomaniax won numerous nominations, accolades and awards, becoming the first ever Kenyans to be nominated for an MTV award. They toured all the major towns and centres in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, about 12 states in the USA, the UK, UAE (Dubai), Australia, etc.

In 2006, Nyashinski left to join his family in the US, pursuing business interests while at it.

The Return

In 2015, music called him back home and he released a single and video “Letigo” together with ace urban Kenyan artiste Nameless, garnering critical acclaim and leaving fans asking if he was coming back, and more importantly displaying his singing skills too! The positive feedback received, together with many follow-up questions from fans, old and new alike led him to release, in May 2016, his first official solo song and video “Now You Know”, which, six months later, became the first ever video by a Kenyan rap artiste to hit 1 million views on YouTube. His sophomore single “Mungu Pekee” (Only God), released in October 2016 became an instant hit in Kenya and eventually abroad. The accompanying lyric video went on, in under 3 months, to hit the 1 million views mark on YouTube.

In 2016, Nyashinski was featured in Coke Studio, a major music TV show, paired up specifically with Nigerian sensation Yemi Alade and Uganda’s rising Rubi, and later on as the Kenyan representative, amongst other African artistes, in a collaboration with US R&B sensation Trey Songz.

In 2017, Nyashinski shocked the Kenyan music industry when he released two hit singles with accompanying videos the same day. “Malaika” and “Aminia” went on to enjoy rave reviews not only in Kenya but with East Africa as well as East Africans in the diaspora. Malaika has now become a top choice for wedding songs in Kenya, already featured as the soundtrack of several wedding TV shows.

He has featured on a number of concerts and performances, in 2017, most noteworthy in Nairobi (alongside US R&B artiste Jidenna) in July and the biggest East African show in the US over the Memorial Weekend in Dallas in May 2017.

He has also featured in a couple of brand campaigns; the Little Cabs (by Safaricom) digital activation in 2016 as well as the Nescafe ‘3 in 1’ radio campaign in 2017. He is lined up as one of the attractions and mentors in the 2017 season of Safaricom’s ‘Blaze’ campaign, set to go around the major towns and cities in Kenya.

2017 sees the return of Nyashinski to yet another season of Coke Studio, paired up with South Africa’s Mafikizolo.
